| TL;DR: Most window coverings in Singapore last five to ten years. Humidity, west-facing afternoon sun and salt air cut that short. Replace when the mechanism fails or the material warps, not when it simply looks tired. |
Most window coverings in Singapore last five to ten years, and the ones that fail early rarely fail for reasons connected to cleaning. At Apex Blinds we sell replacements, so the useful thing we can tell you is when you do not need one. Plenty of blinds we are asked to quote for could be fixed for a fraction of the cost. Here is how long each type lasts, what wears them out, and how to tell a repair from a replacement.

How Long Should Window Coverings Last In Singapore?
| Type | Typical lifespan | What usually fails first |
| Roller blinds | 5 to 8 years | Chain or clutch mechanism |
| Venetian blinds, aluminium | 8 to 12 years | Bent slats, tilt cord |
| Venetian blinds, timber | 5 to 8 years | Warping in humid rooms |
| Fabric blinds | 5 to 8 years | Fading, fraying edges |
| Vertical blinds | 6 to 10 years | Carriers and hangers |
| Zip blind system | 5 to 8 years | Track and outdoor fabric |
| Curtains | 8 to 15 years | Fabric, then track runners |
These are Singapore figures. Overseas sites quote longer because they are not dealing with our climate. Expect the shorter end if the window faces west or sits near the sea.
What Actually Wears Out Window Coverings Here?
Humidity
Singapore’s mean annual relative humidity sits at around 82 per cent, climbing above 90 per cent before sunrise and falling to roughly 60 per cent on dry afternoons, and it frequently reaches 100 per cent during prolonged rain, according to the Meteorological Service Singapore.
No window coverings enjoy that. Timber venetian blinds absorb and release moisture repeatedly, and slats bow because the face toward the room dries faster than the face against the glass. Fabric blinds hold damp in the weave, which is how mould starts. Steel parts inside a mechanism corrode from within, which is why a blind can look perfect and still refuse to hold position.
The afternoon sun
West-facing units without external shading take direct sun from about 3pm. UV breaks down fabric coatings, and the bottom third fades first because it is left down longest. It is the main reason two identical blinds in one flat age differently.
Salt air and aircon condensation
In Pasir Ris, along East Coast, in Punggol or at Sentosa Cove, sea air corrodes brackets, chains and exposed metal. Aluminium handles it well, cheap steel does not.
Condensation is the underrated one. A blind mounted below a ceiling unit, or across a window whose frame sweats, sits damp for hours daily. Over years that beats sunlight for damage. Add roughly 7,000 open-and-close cycles per decade, and mechanism grade decides everything.
When Should You Replace Rather Than Repair?
| Symptom | Repair or replace | Why |
| Chain slips or will not hold | Repair | The clutch is a replaceable part |
| Blind drops on its own | Repair | Mechanism, not the blind |
| Fabric faded unevenly | Replace fabric only | Tube and brackets are usually fine |
| Slats warped or bowed | Replace | Warping cannot be reversed |
| Mould set into the weave | Replace | It will not fully clean out |
| Brackets corroded | Repair | Rebracket and keep the blind |
| Never fitted properly | Replace | Needs a remeasure and refit |
“Our installers see this constantly. Nine times out of ten it is the mechanism, not the blind. People replace a perfectly good roller because the chain slips, when the clutch costs a fraction of a new unit.”
The pattern holds: mechanical faults are usually repairable, material faults are not. A warped slat and a mouldy weave have changed permanently. A slipping clutch has not.
Which Window Coverings Last Longest In Singapore?
Aluminium venetian blinds and PVC verticals are the most durable custom blinds for this climate. They do not absorb moisture or warp, and they tolerate a kitchen or bathroom in a way fabric cannot.
Roller blinds sit in the middle, and their lifespan follows the mechanism, not the fabric. A good clutch on mid-range fabric outlasts premium fabric on a cheap clutch every time.
Timber venetian blinds are shortest-lived, and we still recommend them, just not everywhere. In an air-conditioned living room they look superb. In a kitchen they will disappoint you within a few years, and we would rather say so before you order.
Curtains often outlast everything, since fabric can be replaced independently of the track.
Custom blinds have a quiet advantage: sized properly, they are not forced against the frame on every use. Ill-fitting window coverings wear out mechanisms faster than any weather does.
How Do You Make Window Coverings Last Longer?
Most of the lifespan of window coverings is decided at order stage, not afterwards.
- Match material to the room’s exposure. Aluminium or PVC for wet and west-facing rooms, timber for shaded air-conditioned spaces.
- Ventilate rooms where blinds sit damp. A closed bathroom is the harshest spot in the flat.
- Avoid mounting fabric directly beneath an air-conditioning unit.
- Get the fit right at measurement. Nothing shortens a mechanism faster than a blind that rubs.
Cleaning helps too, and our blind maintenance guide covers the how.
Common Questions About Window Covering Lifespan
How often should blinds be replaced in Singapore?
Every five to ten years depending on type and exposure. West-facing and coastal windows sit at the shorter end. If the mechanism works and the material is sound, there is no need to replace on a schedule.
Can you replace just the fabric on roller blinds?
Usually yes. If the tube, brackets and clutch are healthy, refabricating roller blinds costs far less than a new unit and installs faster.
Do blinds last longer than curtains in a humid climate?
Curtains often last longer because fabric is replaceable and tracks rarely fail. Blinds hold up better in wet rooms where curtains stay damp.
Does the warranty cover fabric fading?
Fading from normal sun exposure is generally treated as wear, not a defect. Fabric usually sits under a separate warranty from the mechanism, so check both.
Not Sure Whether Yours Need Replacing?
Send us a photo before you spend anything. Often the answer is a clutch or a rebracket rather than a new set of window coverings, and we would rather tell you that than sell you something you do not need.
